Distributed range & status
Endemic snake species found in Sri Lanka. They are mainly found in areas with dark brown soil such as Hanthan, Nawalapitiya, Sinharaja, Waligalla, Peradeniya, Gampola, Ginigathchena, Ambuluwawa, Yatiyanthota, Ratnapura, and Balangoda.

The mid body has 17 scale rows, which are not overlapped. Lateral scale length is as same as the frontal.

Characteristics
The body is very short, & cylindrical. It lacks a distinct neck. Small, pointed, dorsoventrally flattened head is present. The eye is covered with a membrane. Snout bears a small keel. The tail shield is concave and circular, it bears tubercles.

Colour
Dorsal body of this snake is blackish brown with scales bearing yellow or white ridge. Lateral body bears yellow or white approximately 23 triangular patches in two rows very clearly. These patches become larger near the neck area. Head, neck and tail arrears are darker in colour. Rostral, scales near supralabials and post nasal scales are light in colour. Tail has a yellow ring. Tail shield is yellow colour and includes patches which are yellow or black. Ventral scales have a clear ridge which is yellow or white in colour.

Venom
These snakes are not venomous. Do not attempt to attack.

Dentition

Behavior
Found in loose soil with litter also in agricultural lands and sometimes from deep down in the ground. Females are more common.

Breeding
These snake species produce 2-4 offspring.

Growth
At birth they measure 90mm & grow up to 200-250mm.

Food
These snakes mainly feed on earth worms and also they are seen to utilize insects.
